"An overview of the most commonly used drugs and review of the theories of how substances abuse problems commence. Explores different models of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention to include community education strategies as well as treatment approaches, using self help groups as a foundation of recovery. Students learn to understand and appreciate the use of the 12 steps as well as self help programs in working with clients. Helps students plan intervention strategies for diverse populations inclusive of cultural and ethnic differences, and special populations such as adolescents, senior citizens, disabled, women, gay and lesbian clients."
