AS - Associate in Science

The associate in science in Health Sciences degree provides students with an overview of career opportunities within healthcare as well as foundational knowledge about the field. The degree offers students a pathway to:

  • Prepare for a career in health while taking pre-clinical courses for one of City Tech’s competitive clinical degrees (including nursing, dental hygiene, radiologic technology).

  • Continue health-related studies by pursuing a baccalaureate degree (e.g., BS Healthcare Policy and Management)

Learning Outcomes

The Health Sciences associate degree is designed to prepare students for more advanced degree specializations, as well as meaningful entry-level employment in the healthcare industry.

  • Develop an appreciation of the diversity and responsibilities associated with healthcare careers.

  • Communicate with appropriate terminology used in healthcare safety.

  • Demonstrate competency in how to implement personal and workplace safety standards.

  • Identify components of the BEINGS (biology, environment, immunology, nutrition, genetics, public health (social)) model.

  • Define strengths and stressors of each components of the BEINGS model.

Distance Learning Information

The AS in Health Sciences has been approved by NYSED and MSCHE to be offered as a fully online program.

This degree program does not accept international students needing an F-1 visa, because we cannot guarantee that students will be able satisfy the Department of Homeland Security requirement that students maintain their full-time status and do not take more than 3 credits online each semester (dhs.gov). A significant component of this program is offered online.

Before applying, an international applicant who wishes to study at City Tech under an F-1 visa should email Vanessa Villaneuva, VVillaneuva@citytech.cuny.edu.

Advisement Information

Please consult the department website for full details.

Bachelor's degrees and AA and AS degrees require six flexible common core courses: at least one course in each of the five flexible core areas and an additional sixth course in one of them. Students can complete no more than two courses from any one area. AAS degrees may require fewer overall flexible core credits.

Some courses that are required for the major also meet general education requirements. Choosing to take advantage of double duty can speed up progress toward graduation and increase elective credits. In DegreeWorks, a double duty course displays and fulfills both requirements, but the credits count only once; the elective area will adjust automatically. Specific options for double duty courses may be listed here or noted in the degree map below.

Students at New York City College of Technology must complete two courses designated writing intensive (WI) for the associate level, one from general education requirements and one from the major.

Transfer students and those who have earned a prior degree may have part or all of this requirement waived; please consult the Degree Requirements page for additional information.
