Overview
Official Name of Program
Department(s) Sponsoring Program
Degree Designation
City Tech’s bachelor of science in education program in Career and Technical Education is renowned for producing the most subject-area teachers in New York City and its surrounding areas. The New York City public school system has the largest number of career and technology high schools in the country. The employment outlook is strong and many teaching positions are hiring CityTech graduates with this degree. The program has trained many well-prepared teachers and administrators in CTE areas like aviation, electrical/electronics, computer technology, graphic arts, construction, restorative dentistry, vision care, and culinary arts. Graduates can prepare for teaching positions in public schools, BOCES, correctional institutions, private trade schools, and more.
Our program equips students with teaching experience through internships and student teaching. In these clinical courses, students gain vital skills like lesson planning, classroom management, assessment strategies, and school administration under experienced teacher mentorship. They can also assess their employment readiness and explore job opportunities.
Graduates of the program will meet the course requirements for both the initial and professional CTE teaching certificates. Those who wish to advance to supervisory and administrative positions in education can pursue graduate degrees in various fields of education, which are available at The City University of New York and other institutions.
Learning Outcomes
Our mission, as urban educators, is to prepare professionally competent, reflective and caring technical educators for a world of technology and diversity. Therefore, every graduate of the program is prepared to demonstrate:
General Knowledge – based on a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences that forms the basis for our shared values, understandings, and responsibilities in a democracy.
Technical Competency – including knowledge and skill in career and technical education content areas to enable students to achieve high
standards of learning and performance.
Professional Competency – based on knowledge of students and proficiency in designing instruction appropriate for their developmental levels and needs; proficiency in designing, planning, implementing, and managing the instructional process in a safe and nurturing environment; and using a variety of methods, assessment techniques, and resources.
Competency in the Use of Technology – ability to use modern computer technology and the internet to facilitate and enhance the instructional process and student learning.
Caring Dispositions – personal and interpersonal characteristics that build upon and enhance dispositions to be caring professionals who have respect for learners of every age and background.
Reflective Practice – critical analysis, evaluation and continuous improvement of professional practice and life-long learning.
Sensitivity to Diversity – awareness of the diverse cultures that make up our urban schools, communities and our global society; and the basis for practices that support and meet students’ learning needs.
Professional Licensure
Completers of the program can apply for the New York State initial and professional teaching certificate if they meet requirements for mandatory workshops.
Occupational Experience Verification and Competency Validation
All students seeking a career and technical teaching certificate must provide documentation of appropriate work experience in their desired occupational area for state teaching certification. The duration depends on their educational background: high school diploma or equivalent, four years; associate degree, two years; and baccalaureate degree, one year.
Students without the required work experience but with appropriate occupational training through career and technical high schools or college associate degree programs must plan to acquire it before applying.
See the NYSDOE Office of Teaching Initiative website for further information.
Accreditation
Initial Certificate in Career and Technical Teacher Education program is accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).
Additional Costs
Education students are typically also required to be fingerprinted for clinical placements required during coursework. This cost can exceed $100 but is covered by financial aid for students who are eligible.
In order to become licensed teachers in New York State and eligible for hiring in public schools, students in Education programs that are registered with NY State Education Department to lead to certification must take mandatory state workshops offered by NYS-certified third-party vendors.

Requirements
First-time students may enter if they meet general college criteria for admission.
Transfer students may transfer from a City Tech associate program before or after completing the associate degree, or from other colleges.
All transfer students have their transcripts evaluated to determine their appropriate placement in the program. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is generally required for transfer students; applicants with grade point averages above 2.5 may be considered.
To be admitted to teacher education, all applicants must complete a department application and be interviewed by program faculty to determine their eligibility for state certification and potential for success in the program.
Bachelor's degrees and AA and AS degrees require six flexible common core courses: at least one course in each of the five flexible core areas and an additional sixth course in one of them. Students can complete no more than two courses from any one area.

Some courses that are required for the major also meet general education requirements. Choosing to take advantage of double duty can speed up progress toward graduation and increase elective credits. In DegreeWorks, a double duty course displays and fulfills both requirements, but the credits count only once; the elective area will adjust automatically. Specific options for double duty courses may be listed here or noted in the degree map below.
All baccalaureate students starting at City Tech or transferring in with 30 or fewer credits, in addition to the common and flexible core courses, will also complete the following 12 credits: one course in speech/oral communication; one interdisciplinary course; and two additional liberal arts courses or, in BTech programs, additional liberal arts credits to reach a minimum total of 42 credits in general education.
In meeting general education requirements overall, students must take at least one advanced liberal arts course or two sequential courses in a foreign language. An advanced course is at the 2000 level or higher and has a prerequisite in the same or a closely related discipline. Examples of courses with prerequisites in closely related disciplines are: ECON 1101 and SOC 3301; PSY 1101 and SOC 2403. Transfer students with more than 30 earned credits or a prior degree have modified college option requirements, as noted on the Transfer Credit page.
Students at New York City College of Technology must complete two courses designated writing intensive (WI) for the associate level, one from general education requirements and one from the major; and two additional courses designated WI for the baccalaureate level, one from general education and one from the major. Transfer students and those who have earned a prior degree may have part of this requirement waived. Please consult the Degree Requirements page for additional information.
Students must receive a grade of B or higher in each course taken with an EDU prefix. Any student earning a grade lower than B in an EDU course may not progress in the program without repeating the course and earning a minimum grade of B or higher.
No course in the program may be repeated more than once without department permission. In the event of failure or a grade of B- or lower after two attempts, the student will be required to change to another major outside the Career & Technology Teacher Education Department.
A minimum grade point average of 2.7 is required both for progression within the Career and Technical Teacher Education curriculum and for enrollment in student internship and student teaching. Students who fall below a 2.7 grade point average are required to arrange a meeting with a Career and Technology Teacher Education Department faculty advisor to discuss plans to improve their academic standing. Students who withdraw will be considered for readmission on an individual basis and only if they withdraw in good standing (passing all courses at time of withdrawal).
A minimum grade point average of 2.7 is required for graduation.
